How to Master Wine Storage in 7 Easy Steps

  • 3 min read

So, you bought some wine that you don’t plan on drinking all at once. Great! However, you don’t know the first thing about wine storage. Don’t fret. It’s not rocket science (although there is science involved).

What’s more, you don’t need a wine cellar either.

Whether you’re a business owner, wine connoisseur, or someone who just loves to bring out a glass of merlot as you binge-watch your latest Netflix addiction, you can master how to store wine in just a few simple steps.

The following are the 7 steps to store wine the right way...

1. Use Quality Wine Racks For Storage

If you’re just starting out with your wine collection, we recommend investing in  high-quality wine racks. Sure, they make storing your wine a lot easier. But they also make beautiful additions to your home or business.

2. Store Your Wine At The Right Temperature

The ideal temperature to store wine is between 11 to 14 degrees Celsius. But don’t worry: it’s not an exact science. As long as you plan to drink the wine within a few years of release, you don’t need to worry if your wine gets a few degrees warmer than this.

For those looking to age their wine in the long-term, you can consider installing temperature control. With that said, the rule of thumb is: keep it cool - but not too cool - and your wine will be just fine.

3. Store Your Wine On Its Side

Ever wonder why wine is stored on its side? There are a few reasons for this. Theoretically, it keeps the cork from getting dry. It’s also an effective way of saving space.

But, if we’re honest: it’s also largely tradition. On the other hand, if you plan to pop those wine bottles in the short to mid-term, or they have alternative closures, you can be a renegade and store your bottles upright.

4. Protect Your Wine From Sunlight

Exposing your wine to sunlight can pose a real problem for long-term wine storage. Naturally, conventional wisdom will tell you to keep your collection somewhere shady.

Ceiling lights aren’t a threat, but incandescent bulbs are a little safer than fluorescent bulbs which can emit small amounts of UV.

Fun fact: the reason why wine bottles are dark is to act like sunglasses for your wine!

5. Protect Your Wine From Vibrations

You should keep your wine away from sources of vibration. These include washing machines, music speakers, train stations. The theory is that these vibrations can disturb the sediment in the wine, disrupting the delicate aging process that makes wine taste oh so good.

That’s why we recommend getting a reliable wine rack to keep your wine vibration-free.

6. Store Your Wine At The Right Humidity

We’ve all heard that you should store your wine at the right humidity. But, unless you’re planning to store your wine for 10 or more years (in which case you should consider more controlled storage), this isn’t something you need to worry about too much. Ideally, aim for 70% humidity. But really, anywhere between 50-80% is considered safe.

But hey, if you want to prevent any second-guessing, why not install humidity control?

7. Keep Your Wine Storage Consistent

Perhaps just as important as storing your wine under the right conditions is keeping it that way. Any sudden changes in temperature or light conditions can spoil your wine. In short, once you start storing your wine - keep it there.

Where Should You Store Your Wine?

So, now you know how to store your wine, but where should you store it? We know not everyone owns a wine cellar. But that’s okay. If you’re like most people and don’t own a wine fridge, you ideally want to keep your wine somewhere cool, shady and not exposed to direct sunlight. This could be anywhere in your home or business.

You see, it’s more about avoiding conditions that work against your wine. This is why investing in purpose-built wine storage racks are a must-have. They let you store your wine anywhere - even if you lack the space to put them.
